Kneebars are very common submissions. They are very powerful, but with great power comes great responsibility. Apply them slowly with control and don't yank it on. It doesn't take much for them to work.
Entangle his leg between your legs. You want to make sure that you keep you hip close to his hips like when doing an armbar.
Keep his leg extended and close to you. You hug his foot and keep his leg extended with the knee perpendicular to your body. That is, if you are at an angle with his leg, then try to reposition to be perpendicular so he can't twist out.
Try to hug his foot with his between your head and the mat. You want it to be very tight to your body so be can't get out. You can experiment with different grips, like under-the-armpit grip. In that case, usually you use the armpit in the air and not the one near the ground.
Finally rotate your torso so your head goes towards his body in the opposite direction as his knee goes.
Stay close. Stay close. Stay close. The main reason they fail is because either you were too far from his hips or you didn't hug his leg tight enough to your body. Here's a few tutorials on kneebars:
Don't let him figure-4 his legs, which is a counter. You can help prevent his by laying on his other leg when doing the kneebar.
